As people spent more time at home in 2020, a comfortable and well-maintained space became a top priority for homeowners across the country. In fact, Angi’s annual State of Home Spending report found that homeowners typically spent $4,000 more on home projects in 2020 than in previous years. Looking forward to 2021, expect a continued increase in home spending — and on the same types of projects.
Here’s a look at 2020’s most popular jobs, and the tasks topping homeowners’ to-do lists in the coming year:
1. Interior and exterior painting
Affordability and visual value made interior painting projects the most popular of 2020, and this trend shows no sign of slowing down in the new year. When asked about projects they plan to complete in 2021, homeowners of all ages said interior painting was their top choice. Outdoor upgrades, including exterior painting jobs, are also high on the list.
2. Room remodels
Bathroom remodels were the second most popular project in 2020, and interest remains strong in updating other frequently used parts of the home. In addition to a bathroom upgrade, homeowners say they’d most like to complete a kitchen renovation.
3. Flooring
As consumers opted for relatively low-cost projects, added functionality, and visual change at home in 2020, flooring updates were a great way to get all three. Flooring remains a top-requested home project — a trend expected to continue in 2021.
